Provinces that compose Ecuador


PROVINCES THAT COMPOSE ECUADOR

Ecuador is divided into 22 provinces. The 22 provinces are composed of 215 cantons. In 1900 there were 48 counties in 1950 increased to 87 in 1975 and numbered 116, and the end of 1999 totaled 215, divided as follows: 83 in the Costa, 91 in la Sierra, 38 in the Amazon and Galapagos 3.

Ecuador is comprised of four natural regions:

Coast or Costa, located on the western fringe. Five coastal provinces.


Interandina or Sierra, named Alley part lacordillera mountainous Andes. 10 provinces.


Amazon or Trasandina, to integrate the mainland called "Amazonia" 6 eastern provinces.

Insular, comprising the province of Galapagos, an archipelago of 13 islands and

17 islands located 1,000 km west of mainland Ecuador.
